Zune Hacks - Access Zune filesystem in Windows

SauliusM has figured out how to access the Zune's filesystem:

First of all go to your device manager (right click my computer then properties then hardware tab). Find Zune and go in its properties goto detail and go to the Device Instance ID tab. Keep This open because you will need to know that tag.

Now open up your registry (start -> run -> regedit)

Then open the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
goto system -> CurrentControlSet -> Enum -> USB

Now this is where you need to go back to the Device Instance ID
look at the id and open the folder in the registry according to the id.

Then open the folder inside it

Now click on Device Parameters but don't open it you should see a list of strings and binaries

Double click on:
EnableDefaultAutoPlaySupport - and change Value Data to 1
PortableDeviceNameSpaceExcludeAutoPlayTab - change to 0
PortableDeviceNameSpaceExcludeFromShell - change to 0
ShowInShell - change to 1

And there you go now theres 2 new things in your My Computer named whatever you named your zune

When you open either of them up theres a drive in there called Storage
In mine there are 16 un-named files, 2 hidden files DevIcon.fil , DevLogo.fil, If youve ever received a file then theres the names of those zune's, and a WMPInfo.xml. 5 folders 2 hidden named

Hidden:
Albums
Playlists

Non-Hidden:
Music
Pictures
Video

Some files have a picture of a lock on them and some dont. You cant play or view anything or change anything. You can delete any files you want though.

If you want to open files all you need to do is start the zune software.

Convert video to Zune format with Avivo Video Converter

AMD is pitching its ATI Radeon X1000-series graphics cards as the ideal add-on for anyone who buys Microsoft's Zune media player.

AMD said its Avivo Video Converter tool, part of the Catalyst Control Center utility, can quickly convert content created by its DVR software into the format favoured by Portable Media Center devices - a format Zune will also play.

In the software there is a profile which supports video output to the Zune without the need for transcoding. You can download the zune video converter with the Catalyst Control Center which is a free download for all ATI hardware owners (X1000 and up).

There is also a document which walks a user through on how to convert their videos into a Portable Media Center format which is supported by the Zune.

Hacking Zune - Guts exposed by xbox hacker bunnie

Also, if they did it right, they will have enabled the built-in security features of the MX31 so you can’t/it is very difficult to hijack the boot–but it is still vulnerable to buffer overruns, etc. as far as I can tell. Haven’t bothered to test it either way, but the High Assurance Boot (HAB) feature is worthy of caution if you are thinking about trying something.

Additional info about the Zune chips was posted by Tom Parker in the same post:

Sounds like the hardware hackers are hard at work to see what they can get this little device to do. A recent post on Digg.com suggests that the hardware will be able to boot linux while not providing anything to back up the claim other than the fact that linux boots on a freescale processor.
